Pend Oreille Hazardous Incident Response Team

» History

The Hazmat team was founded in late 2005 by Fire Chief Mark Havener of Pend Oreille Fire District No. 3. There was an identified need for some type of coordinated response and Pend Oreille County Department of Emergency Management owned an incident response trailer. This trailer came from a remediation award after an event that occurred in the region.

The Team originally had wide spread interest from the volunteer Fire Districts and some other associated agencies. The objective was to offer a resource with operations level capabilities and response to the county. In the event of a larger event, the team could call upon the Spokane City Hazmat Resource that offers technician and specialist level response.

The team has trained on a monthly basis since then and has acquired additional equipment. Decontamination capabilities have improved with the addition of two large three line hazmat decon shelters, water and air/space heaters. These were acquired from another county that had no longer any need for them.

The Hazmat Team received a grant for two oil spill response trailers from the Washington Department of Ecology and placed them in service in late 2007. These trailers are primarily designed for containing oil based spills on the lakes and rivers in the county and the region.

Fortunately the team has only had one call out in it’s history. The team continues to set good objectives for annual growth and training. The Hazmat Team is currently coordinated by Don Thomson from South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue. Don is a HM Technician with many years of experience in Southwest Ohio.
