Heartsaver CPR for Lay Rescuers

» Course Description

The Heartsaver CPR course is designed to teach CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) to all lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. Participants include security guards, firefighters, police, and other lay responders. Although the course may be used to teach CPR to all lay rescuers, it is specifically designed for lay rescuers who are required to obtain a course completion card – credential- documenting completion of a CPR course. All rescuers are trained in CPR and relief of FBOA.

The course runs slightly more than 3 hours for adult victims or for infant and child victims. The combined course for adult, infant, and child victims lasts 5½ hours to 6½ hours. The course includes diverse learning opportunities, including a videotaped presentation of the Chain of Survival and warning signs of cardiovascular emergencies; instructor-led discussion to reinforce the signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking; videotaped skills demonstration and Practice; instructor-led practice scenarios; and peer practice sessions.

South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue is now offering CPR and First Aid classes at Diamond Lake Station. These classes are open to the public and are certified courses through the American Heart Association. HeartSaver and First Aid classes will be offered the second Saturday of the month. The CPR class begins at 9:00 a.m. The First Aid portion of the class begins after completion of the CPR module. All students will receive their cards on the same day after successful completion of the course. The cost of this course is $30.00 for the CPR course and $20.00 for the First Aid course. Costs cover the textbook, cards, and instruction. If you register at least one week prior to the class, you will save $10.00 on both courses. That is $40.00 for both with early registration.
» Course Objectives
The AHA developed the Heartsaver CPR course to achieve one ultimate objective: to increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest by increasing the number of rescuers prepared to phone 911 and provide early CPR. By strengthening the early access and early CPR links in the Chain of Survival in every community, the AHA should meet its mission: to reduce disability and death due to cardiovascular disease and stroke. In addition, the course attempts to prevent disability and death and the need for CPR by teaching the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and teaching methods to reduce death caused by sudden infant death syndrome in infants and injuries in children.
» Knowledge (Cognitive) Knowledge
At the end of the course the participant will be able to
1. Describe the links in the Chain of survival, including the importance of

  • Phoning 911

  • Performing CPR

  • Increasing the probability of early defibrillation by phoning the EMS system or other PAD responders

  • Ensuring the arrival of early advanced care by phoning 911

2. Describe the steps of CPR

  • When to start CPR

  • When to start rescue breathing

  • How to check for normal breathing or signs of circulation

  • The ABC sequence of CPR

  • The signs of severe or complete FBAO

3. Describe the signs of 4 major emergencies in adults

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Cardiac arrest

  • FBAO

4. Describe strategies to prevent sudden infant death syndrome in infants and injuries in children.
» Skills (Psychomotor) Objectives
At the end of course the participant will be able t5o demonstrate the following skills using an adult or infant and child manikin (determined by the course modules completed) and a telephone:
1. Phone 911
2. Rescue breathing using mouth to mouth ventilation and mouth to barrier device ventilation
3. 1-rescuer CPR
4. Relief of FBOA in the responsive victim
This course can be taught to include a completion card (a credential) documenting completion of a CPR AED course. With and addition ½ hour of instruction.
