Basic Life Support
Instructor Course
EMS Captain Darwin (Buck) Cole is now certified by the American Heart Association to provide CPR Instructor
training and certification courses. The tuition fee of $180.00
plus books covers two days of class instruction. If you would like
information and a registration form for the next BLS Instructor

BLS Instructor Course Objectives And
Requirements for
Completion
This 2-day course is designed to prepare Instructors to teach CPR information
and skills, and to generate enthusiasm for AHA goals and objectives. AHA
Instructors are the best tool the AHA has to fulfill its mission – to reduce
death and disability caused by heart disease and stroke. The more skilled
instructors we have, the more people will learn CPR.

After completing this course, all participants
should be able to:
Identify the components of an ECC program 1) Define BLS
2) Describe the early warning signs of heart attach and stroke 3) List and discuss causes of sudden death 4) Define cardiopulmonary arrest 5) Describe the steps of CPR, use of an AED, and relief of FBAO, in the
infant, child, and adult 6) Describe the rationale for each of the steps in CPR
In teaching your classes, you will be expected
to: 1) Use appropriate AHA Curricula 2) Identify and correct faulty CPR performance 3) Discuss principles of evaluation and remedial instruction 4) Effectively use audiovisual equipment and materials to support
presentations

You will be able to accurately demonstrate the
skills of 1-and 2-rescuer adult CPR, use of an AED, and management of FBAO in
the responsive and unresponsive adult, pediatric (infant and child)
resuscitation and management of FBAO in the responsive and unresponsive infant
and child, all according to AHA guidelines

You will be able to demonstrate effectively
manikin maintenance requirements and correct manikin cleaning and
decontamination techniques

You will be able to evaluate basic provider
candidates
-
Identify materials and resources for continued
study and development as a new BLS Instructor

Use appropriate course scheduling and
record-keeping procedures as defined by AHA policy

Describe the role of the BLS Instructor
-
Conduct any other component of the course
according to local needs
The course tuition fee is $180.00, which includes instruction and course
materials. Early registration is recommended as class size is
limited.

BLS Instructor Position
The BLS Instructor is the core component of the TC. The Instructor is a member
of the TC internal structure and provides the majority of teaching and
interaction with participants in the BLS Provider and Instructor Courses.
Criteria
Current AHA Healthcare Provider Status
-
Passed the HCP exam with at least a 90% score and
no remediation
-
A minimum of 16 years of age is recommended
Method of certification
-
Successful completion of a BLS instructor course,
exam score at least 84%
-
Within 1 year of completion of the Instructors
Course, teaching ability is successfully monitored by an Instructor Trainer
(IT) during a BLS Provider Course

After successful monitoring and the receipt by the
TC of the following documents, a BLS Instructor card will be issued:

Instructor Responsibilities
-
Teaches Provider Courses following AHA guidelines
and using AHA approved teaching materials

Provides documentation of teaching activities in
the community

Supports the chain of Survival activities in the
community

Provides documentation of teaching activities to
the TC for course taught through another TC
